At Stondon Lower School we teach daily discreet Maths lessons and provide our children with the opportunities to apply their Mathematical skills through real life and our creative curriculum. Teachers plan challenging lessons to meet the requirements of the National Curriculum. Chris Crispin Jones’ lesson materials are adapted to suit our children’s needs. Lessons focus on practical, investigative activities which encourage independent learning. Lessons include daily counting, mental maths activities and levels of challenge which enable all pupils to fully participate in lessons which broaden children’s understanding of the concepts taught.
The following are the four main areas taught:
- Number (properties, place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and fractions)
- Geometry (shape, position and direction)

In years 1, 2, 3 and 4 the children have their own Mathletics www.mathletics.co.uk which allows them to access games, programs of study and resources at home and at school. The children also have the opportunity to complete various maths challenges through assemblies. Children’s mathematical successes are celebrated in our weekly assembly.
Our calculation policy, which has been adapted from Chris Crispin Jones and agreed with by our local middle school and other local lower schools, can be found below.
We aim to provide an enriched mathematical curriculum where children are engaged and inspired.
